Cryotherapy has been used for over 40 years to treat many different musculoskeletal, arthritic and dermatological conditions. Utilising the body’s pathological response to cold stimulation, it reduces inflammation, stimulates collagen production within connective tissue found in the skin and boosts metabolism. It has become a safe and effective addition to allied health care around the world.

At Bare Motion, our Juka Cryosauna is an open-topped chamber the size of a small shower, the interior of the cabin is oval and heterogenous allowing the temperature inside to be spread out evenly.

The sauna has an elevated floor to enable the client to be submerged to their shoulders to fully benefit from the low temperatures. This ensures they keep their head out of the cold area, enabling them to safely breath the oxygenated air from the main room and keep in constant communication with the practitioner.

When in operation our professionally trained practitioners regulate the temperature within the range from -120֯ C to -150֯ C performing treatments ranging between 1 minute to 3 minutes. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) applied for short periods of time, stimulates physiological reactions (“fight or flight’) which result in analgesic, anti-swelling, hormonal, immune, and circulatory system reactions.

Elephant Machine – Localised Treatment

The Elephant is used for localised cryotherapy treatment for specific joints and skin regions. The sub-zero nitrogen gas is administered through a specialised hose for several minutes to the inflamed region in two Phases.

The cold initiates vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the skin and causes tissue ischemia. This lowers the impact of trauma and reduces the rate of metabolic processes. This is helpful for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The hypoxia also reduces the perceived pain.

Local hyperaemia occurs (increase in local blood flow due to the effect of internal and external factors, known as the rebound effect), during which metabolic processes are intensified and muscle tension is reduced. This preps the muscles for therapy from our physiotherapist or massage therapist.

What are the benefits of Cryotherapy?

  • Joint pain relief for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis treatment – Improves range of motion and flexibility
  • Headache and migraine relief
  • Boosts metabolism and can burn between 500 and 800 calories per session
  • Greater skin elasticity and firmness – Releases endorphins, leaving you feeling fresh and rejuvenated
